Vision Insurance: What to Know Before You Enroll

November 15, 2025

Vision insurance covers routine eye exams, prescription eyeglasses, and contact lenses. Standalone vision plans cost $10-$25/month and typically save money if you wear glasses or contacts. Major vision plan providers include VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, and Superior Vision.

What Vision Insurance Covers

  • Annual eye exam: $0-$15 copay (once per year)
  • Eyeglass frames: $130-$200 allowance every 12-24 months
  • Eyeglass lenses: Covered in full or with small copay
  • Contact lenses: $130-$200 allowance in lieu of glasses
  • Lens enhancements: Discounts on progressive lenses, anti-reflective coating

Is Vision Insurance Worth It?

If you wear glasses or contacts, a $15/month plan ($180/year) that provides a $200 frame allowance plus covered lenses and a free exam typically saves $200-$400 annually. If you don't wear corrective lenses, a plan may not be cost-effective—but annual eye exams can detect early signs of diabetes, glaucoma, and other conditions.
