Critical Illness Insurance: Is It Worth It?

November 20, 2025

Critical illness insurance pays a lump-sum cash benefit—typically $10,000 to $100,000—if you're diagnosed with a covered serious illness. This money can be used for anything: medical deductibles, mortgage payments, travel to specialists, or everyday living expenses during treatment. It's designed to supplement, not replace, your primary health insurance.

What Conditions Are Covered?

Most critical illness plans cover:

  • Cancer (excluding certain early-stage skin cancers)
  • Heart attack and stroke
  • Kidney failure
  • Major organ transplant
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery

Some plans also cover additional conditions like ALS, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and severe burns.

Typical Costs

  • Age 30: $20-$35/month for $25,000 benefit
  • Age 40: $30-$55/month for $25,000 benefit
  • Age 50: $50-$90/month for $25,000 benefit

Is It Worth It?

Critical illness insurance is worth considering if you have a high-deductible health plan, limited savings, family history of cancer or heart disease, or if a serious illness would create financial hardship beyond medical bills.
